Questions & Answers

What causes excess hair?
Excess hair may be caused by many factors including age, ethnicity, genetics, hormones, and medications. It is a common problem shared by both men and women. Hair does not come in any one size or type. Follicles in different parts of the body produce differing types of hair. Hair can grow in thick, bushy patches or in long thin strands. In addition, hair is produced in follicles that can be found at different depths and densities — as close to the skin's surface as a millimeter or as deep as five millimeters or more.

The length of the whole growth cycle depends on the body part, and lasts anywhere from 4 to 12 months. Hair reduction is considered permanent when a significant amount of hair does not return for a period of time longer than the complete growth cycle.

What types of treatments are available for hair removal?
There are many “traditional” methods of hair removal. The temporary methods are waxing, shaving, depilatory creams, tweezing, and threading. The only other permanent solution is electrolysis. Electrolysis is more painful, more time consuming (often taking years), and generally more expensive than laser hair removal. It also has a lower success rate for hair removal. However, electrolysis is the only permanent choice for people with white, grey and bleach blonde hair.
These other methods require much more commitment and are more transient and painful compared to laser hair removal. Advanced technology lasers and light sources are rapidly changing hair removal treatment, providing gentle, non-invasive and long-lasting solutions to unwanted hair. Among laser and light-based devices, the LightSheer™Diode Laser System provides superior results and patient satisfaction.

LightSheer™Diode Laser is “THE GOLD STANDARD” for PERMANENT hair reduction.

How does the laser work?
The pigment in the hair follicle absorbs the laser energy. This energy then destroys the follicle without damaging the surrounding skin. This is achieved by the duration of the pulse of the laser and the special cooling hand piece. All of the hair that is under the area of the hand piece is treated.

Is the treatment painful?
The sensation of pain varies for each individual. The procedure usually feels like a tiny rubber band snapped against the skin. The procedure can be made virtually pain free with the use of topical anesthetic creams such as EMLA. Most individuals find laser hair removal to be MUCH LESS painful than electrolysis or waxing.

How many treatments are required?
The number of treatments required varies for each individual. On average most people require four to six treatments. Less or more treatments may be required depending on your skin and hair type. The treatments are performed every 4-6 weeks for areas on the face and every 9-12 weeks for areas on the rest of the body.

What are the side effects?
Most side effects are mild and transient. Slight swelling and redness in the area is normal after the treatment and the sensation may feel similar to a sunburn. This should resolve within several hours to several days after the treatment and can be soothed with ice or a mild anti-inflammatory cream or gel. Since the area treated may be sensitive for a few days, it is wise to limit your sun exposure, wear both protective clothing and sun block whenever you are outdoors. The physician will explain any possible side effects at the initial consultation.

What is the cost?
The cost of laser hair removal is based on the area being treated. Generally the cost varies depending on the size of the area being treated. The cost ranges from $75 per treatment up to $700 per treatment.
